Mesothelioma and asbestosis affect the lungs but are not classified as lung cancer. Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, while lung cancer affects the inner lung tissue. Still, asbestos exposure has also been linked to cancer of the lung. And while mesothelioma and asbestosis can take several decades to develop, typically, asbestos-related lung cancer is detected in 15 years.
Because lung cancer is usually associated with smokers, there has been a lot of attention paid to smokers who were exposed to high levels of asbestos. Studies have shown that the combination of cigarette smoking and asbestos exposure is particularly deadly. Smokers exposed to asbestos are 10 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers.
Symptoms of lung cancer include: a nagging cough that worsens over time; coughing up blood; repeated attacks of pneumonia or bronchitis; pain in the chest and arm; loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss; shortness of breath, wheezing or hoarseness; an increased amount of sputum or sputum streaked with blood; swelling of the face and arms. Anyone who was exposed to asbestos and is experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
