Consumer advocacy group Public Citizen pushed a Meridia recall since March 2002. The group wanted Meridia recalled because of the hundreds of serious adverse effects, in addition to cardiac deaths Meridia patients were reporting. Even prior to FDA Meridia approval, the advisory committee voted against Meridia''s approval, a point Public Citizen has made supporting a Meridia recall.
Sold in 70 countries, a Meridia recall would make a huge impact on the 8.5 million people that have used the diet pill. Available since 1998, a Meridia recall has been supported because of the high number of cardiovascular effects it has been associated with. The Meridia recall supporters noted the instances of heart disease, stroke, seizures, and other serious conditions.
The request for the FDA to issue a Meridia recall soon led to Meridia lawsuits being filed. The FDA advisory committee did not believe the benefits of Meridia outweighed the risks, and some consumers feel a Meridia recall is necessary because of the marginal effects produced alongside high risk. If a Meridia recall occurs it will likely create a high volume of Meridia lawsuits.
