Medtronic manufactures the SynchroMed Drug Pump II, a surgically implantable device used to treat chronic or intractable (does not respond to other treatment) pain.
Some features of the pump include:
Because the medication goes directly to the spine, where there are nerve receptors for pain, it can control the pain with a minimal amount of medication compared to when it is taken orally. The oral medication has to be given in larger doses because much of it gets broken down when it circulates through the body on its way to the spinal cord.
A pump-delivered dose of morphine can be about 1/300 the amount of an oral dose, according to Medtronic. The implantable device is 3.4 inches in diameter and .77 inches thick.
Pain therapies using the pump include treatments for:
Cancer and treatments for the disease both can cause moderate to severe pain. Diseases of the spine or injuries to it can cause chronic back pain that sometimes extends to the legs.
CRPS usually affects the arms, hands, legs, or feet. It also is called reflex sympathetic dystrophy. This kind of pain can be a problem following injury or surgery to a limb. Painful neuropathy results from nerve damage. Its sufferers feel severe, chronic pain.
In addition to having a pump implanted, some patients have a hand-held Personal Therapy Manager (PTM). Patients who have intermittent pain or an unexpected surge of pain may uses the PTM to give themselves a doctor-prescribed extra dose of medication.
The company has discontinued selling two other pump systems to help manage pain, the IsoMed Constant Flow Infusion System and the SynchroMed Drug Infusion System. It does manufacture nerve stimulators to help keep pain under control. The latter work by interrupting pain signals going to the brain from the nerves.
