Traumatic Asphyxia

Traumatic asphyxia during labor or delivery occurs when a lack of oxygen in the brain tissue is present. Instances of acute birth asphyxia can result in neurological injury and death. There are no proven methods to treat traumatic asphyxia, though some studies in animals have suggested brain cooling may protect against brain injury. Traumatic asphyxia may signify a brain abnormality is present, though in some instances it may just be the result of the birthing process, such as when abruptio placenta causes the placenta to tear loose too soon in the birthing process and cuts off the baby''s oxygen supply. The traumatic asphyxia can leave the baby with brain damage that may result in cerebral palsy.
