A Levaquin tendon injury is a painful condition that begins abruptly, sometimes within hours after the administration of Levaquin; at other times, days, weeks, or months later. Levaquin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, a synthetic drug designed to kill certain bacteria that cause infections. Despite its uses, Levaquin is not without serious side effects¡ªits use has been linked to tendon injury in an alarming number of patients.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required additional warnings on Levaquin packaging. Of the hundreds of fluoroquinolone-based tendon ruptures that have been reported to the FDA, about 60 percent are due to Levaquin.
In January 2008, the consumer protection advocacy group Public Citizen filed a lawsuit in federal court to try to compel the FDA to place "black box" warnings ©¤ the strongest and most severe warnings ©¤ on the package inserts of Levaquin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as Cipro, Floxin and Noroxin. Numerous cases of Cipro tendon rupture have also been reported to the FDA
Most of the Levaquin tendon injuries are to the Achilles tendon, the fibrous tissue that connects lower leg muscles to the heel bone. An Achilles tendon rupture can be extremely painful, and it may require surgery as treatment.
Other tendon injuries due to Levaquin use are of the biceps tendon, hand, thumb, wrist, rotator cuff, and knee. The symptoms of most tendon injuries include:
An antibiotic administered to treat, for example, a urinary tract infection would not be expected to cause a patient's shoulder tendon or other tendon to rupture, but it has happened to many patients following Levaquin treatment. The medical bills and other losses that such patients suffer may be compensated by the maker of Levaquin, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical. A Levaquin lawsuit may be an option for patients who have experienced such a severe side effect from a drug.

A class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones needs heightened warnings about the risk of tendon rupture and tendonitis, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday.
