Prior to lead being heavily phased out of certain products and processes, the use of lead was widespread and excessive. Experts did not initially realize the harmful effects lead exposure can have on workers, adults, children and fetuses. By the 1970s, lead was banned from many industrial operations and sources that contained dangerous levels that were a detriment to human health.
Causes of lead poisoning has been identified in a large number of frequently used items over the years, as well as in industrial operations, pant, gasoline and water pipes. Even though lead occurs naturally in the environment, it is at very low levels. A high number of causes of lead poisoning, especially among children, are believed to be from housing still containing high levels of lead in the paint. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 890,000 U.S. children between ages one and five have elevated blood lead levels.
Besides lead exposure from paint sources, causes of lead poisoning can often times be the result of hidden dangers. Over the years, reports of toy-related causes of lead poisoning have surfaced, with various recalls announced in response. An October 2004 issue of Pediatrics described a 4-year old boy in Oregon who became seriously ill after swallowing the medallion from a toy necklace from a vending machine, which led to more than 1.4 million necklaces recalled. The cause of lead poisoning was the swallowed medallion that left the boy to suffer stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea attributed to a virus.
When later brought to a hospital with worsening symptoms, weight loss and anemia, an x-ray showed the metallic object was in the boy''s abdomen still, which led the child to suffer a seizure. It took nearly three weeks in all to discover the symptoms displayed was from lead poisoning and blood tests showed the boy had a lead concentration 12 times higher than the designated level of concern. The cause of lead poisoning was removed from the market, though an Oregon Health and Science University doctor and her colleagues at the state''s health department believes the incident should serve as an alert to parents and doctors of the serious risks of causes of lead poisoning in “unsuspected objects.”
Before lead was heavily phased out, things like toothpaste tubes and condensed milk cans were soldered with lead, which has since been changed. Since children are the most susceptible to causes of lead poisoning, it is important to identify and eliminate any dangerous lead sources from risk. Blood and brain functioning effects in response to causes of lead poisoning can affect a child''s mental and physical growth.
The greatest causes of lead poisoning in children are still identified as lead in pre-1960s housing. Affecting children more severely than adults, causes of lead poisoning can also be extremely harmful to unborn children as well. Lead poisoning can cause mothers to suffer premature births, smaller babies, decreased mental ability in the infant, learning difficulties, reduced growth in young children and stillborn births. Any and all sources of lead should be avoided and children should avoid putting their hands into their mouths that can risk lead ingestion. Every child is recommended to undergo a blood test at six months of age, or whenever lead exposure is believed to have occurred, to measure the amount of lead in the blood and to make sure causes of lead poisoning are being avoided.
