Lariam is the most widely prescribed malaria drugs on the market. Over time, Lariam has become a very controversial drug that has led to an increase in Lariam litigation. Roche makes the drug and continues to claim that it is safe with just one in 10,000 psychiatric side effects suffered.
The figure has been challenged by Lariam litigation, as well as by specialists that think that Roche’s figures are deceptive. Drug companies categorize serious side effects suffered by death, hospitalization, or a long-term disability. When British doctors witnessed Lariam side effects occurring on a much more frequent basis than Roche’s numbers, a study was organized in 1996 and found that one in 140 Lariam users suffered adverse effects that substantially disrupted their lives.
Estimates as large as up to seventy times more patients than identified by Roche will suffer serious effects as the result of the use of Lariam. A former Roche employee now consults with attorneys dealing with Lariam litigation. He says that any drug with a quinolone base like Lariam is likely to have severe psychiatric problems produced in some of the users.
The military developed Lariam, which was later licensed to Roche, and the Lariam litigation has alleged the popular drug has too much at stake by admitting a problem associated to it. Lariam has been taken by more than 25 million people worldwide and many military families have been coming forward questioning its’ safety. Both the government and Roche have maintained throughout questions and increasing Lariam litigation cases that the drug is safe and effective.

The Pentagon announced in late February that it would look into whether a widely-used anti-malarial drug that the Army developed could be causing suicides. The announcement, made to Congress, came as a surprise, since the Pentagon had asserted only one...
