Lariam is a brand name anti-malarial drug for mefloquine. Invented by the U.S. Army, Lariam has been highly controversial in recent times. Millions of people have used Lariam without suffering any adverse effects, however a great number of people have not been so lucky. Roche pharmaceuticals makes Lariam and the company’s internal documents show that it has received over 3,000 reports of psychiatric problems including nightmares, depression, hallucinations, psychosis, aggression, and paranoia.

Even more problematic than suffering psychiatric effects are the growing evidence linking the use of Lariam to neuropsychiatric events. People are alleging the use of Lariam can cause you to lose your mind and do things devastatingly bad. In the summer of 2002, more questions were raised about the deadly and dark effect Lariam could have after a Master Sergeant and three other Ft. Bragg soldiers were accused of killing their wives within less than six weeks of one another.

There are different arguments for why Lariam has remained on such a widespread scale despite the suspicions that it is linked to frightening effects. Attorneys representing Lariam cases allege Roche consciously buried the important safety information in the labeling so that it was not obvious to medical professionals or patients. Even aware consumers that sought out information regarding the safety of Lariam in the labeling were unable to identify a section that adequately warned of psychotic side effects.
