Every year, about 300,000 U.S. patients get new knees and knee replacement surgery is only expected to become more popular. Arthritic knees can be extremely painful and interfere with daily activities. When the pain has become too severe and no treatment methods are effectively working, a total knee replacement might be necessary. Patients that require a total knee replacement will often be limited to walking less than a few blocks. While a total knee replacement has a significantly higher success rate than in the past, complications can still arise.
In September 2003, Smith & Nephew knee replacements were recalled. The knee replacements affected the cementless versions of its Oxinium Genesis II and Profix II implants. Smith & Nephew issued the recall when reports that the affected implants did not properly bond. Normally, knee replacement surgery failure is suffered only when the implanted knee loosens. As a result, some patients had to seek re-operations because of the recalled implants. The rehab that follows a total knee replacement surgery can be much more intensive depending on the patient''s condition. Especially with older patients, whom arthritis affects the most, recovering from a surgical procedure of any type can be especially grueling.
In response to the Smith & Nephew recall knee replacement lawsuits were filed. The defective products lawsuits alleged the recalled medical products caused further damages in some instances. Patients that had received the recalled total knee replacements were now at an increased risk for revision surgery, re-infection, increased joint and muscular damage, as well as painful rehabilitation.
Even though every surgical procedure has risks, when a patient has been improperly exposed to increased risks for adverse effects, it is advised a legal expert is contacted.
