Januvia® lawsuits are defective drug cases that seek to secure compensation for type-2 diabetes patients who have suffered serious side effects as a result of taking this medication. Januvia® is generically known as sitagliptin.
Although Januvia® (sitagliptin) was a ground-breaking diabetes medication when it received FDA approval in 2006, it has been linked to some serious side effects. As of 2009, the FDA had received nearly 90 reports from patients who had been diagnosed with pancreatitis – a potentially fatal swelling of the pancreas – after taking Januvia®.
By the fall of 2009, the FDA had ordered Merck & Co., the company that produces and markets Januvia®, to revise the patient information on all Januvia® packaging and to conduct a 3-month, post-market safety study.
A recent study suggests that Januvia® and another diabetes drug Byetta® may be linked to an increase in the risk for developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
"We have raised concern that there may be a link, but we haven't confirmed it," said lead researcher Dr. Peter Butler, director of the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. "We need to do more work to figure out whether this is real or not."
According to the study, patients taking Januvia® or Byetta® were six times more likely to reports cases of pancreatitis than those taking other medications. Study authors said they also found a nearly 3 percent increase in reported cases of pancreatic cancer among Januvia® and Byetta® patients.
It is important to note that a cause and effects relationship has not been made. More research will need to be conducted to determine the risk. Patients that are concerned about this risk can talk with their doctors.
Drug makers have a responsibility to consumers and when a medication causes harm to a patient, he or she can seek compensation from the drug manufacturing company. Our attorneys are available to investigate potential claims on behalf of people that have taken Januvia® or Byetta® and have experienced pancreas problems.
