As one of the most popular dietary weight loss supplements in the U.S., Hydroxycut claims to help people lose up to 4.5 times more weight (when paired with a low-calorie diet and regular exercise) than diet and exercise alone.
However, despite clinical research that verifies Hydroxycut weight loss claims, patients' reports of serious Hydroxycut side effects triggered a massive FDA recall of various Hydroxycut products on May 1, 2009.
Currently, about one million ephedra-free Hydroxycut products are sold in the U.S. each year. Iovate Health Sciences Inc. (with bases in Canada and New York) makes and distributes all Hydroxycut products.
Ingredients in Hydroxycut
Although some of the ingredients in specific Hydroxycut products may vary, in general, a Hydroxycut ingredients list includes:
- gymnema sylvestre (a tropical Indian herb)
- green tea extract
- hydroxycitric acid (which is extracted from tropical fruit and associated with causing liver problems)
- hydroxygen plu
- white tea extract
Depending on the product, Hydroxycut may or may not contain caffeine as well.
Before ephedra (an herb known to have serious side effects) was banned in the U.S., original Hydroxycut products contained ephedra. Currently, however, ephedra is not contained on any new Hydroxycut ingredients lists.
How to Use Hydroxycut Ingredients
While different Hydroxycut products may have their own unique guidelines for proper administration, for Hydroxycut capsules, appropriate usage involves taking two Hydroxycut ingredients capsules:
- with an 8-ounce glass of water
- 3 times per day
- about 30 to 60 minutes before a meal
Do NOT take Hydroxycut ingredients caplets within 5 hours of going to bed.
Side Effects of Hydroxycut Ingredients
Despite being an effective weight loss supplement, Hydroxycut has been found to cause life-threatening side effects, including:
- cardiovascular disorders
- liver damage
- rhabdomyolysis (a rare condition in which muscle deterioration can lead to kidney failure)
To date, the FDA has received 23 patient reports regarding severe Hydroxycut ingredient side effects. In 2007, one person died after developing serious Hydroxycut-related liver damage. Affected individuals should stop using Hydroxycut immediately and seek emergency medical care to prevent further injuries and, in the worst cases, death.
It is also imperative that injured dieters and bodybuilders follow through with all prescribed treatments for the best chances of recovery.
Legal Remedies for Hydroxycut Injuries
Individuals and families harmed by these recalled products may qualify to seek out a legal remedy for their losses. To determine if they do qualify, injured users are encouraged to meet with an experienced Hydroxycut lawyer as soon as possible.
During a free initial consultation, Hydroxycut attorneys will:
- Evaluate injured patients' claims
- Determine whether a Hydroxycut patient has a provable case and is entitled to a settlement for his or her injuries
- Inform prospective plaintiffs about the process of winning a Hydroxycut lawsuit
- Advise clients regarding the best manner in which to pursue their case
To encourage injured Hydroxycut patients to seek out the settlements they deserve, Hydroxycut attorneys work on contingency — so no payment for legal services is due until (or unless) the case is won.
