Hydroxycut Drug Interactions

Comprised of herbal extracts and other natural ingredients, Hydroxycut is a weight loss supplement that can negatively react with certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. The side effects of using Hydroxycut with certain medications will vary, depending on the drug combination and a patient's medical history.

However, medications known to cause health problems when used with Hydroxycut include:

cimetidine, which reduces stomach acid production
clozapine, prescribed in the treatment of schizophrenia
fluoroquinolone antibiotics, which may be used to treat chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections and/or pneumonia
fluvoxamine, prescribed to treat OCD
stimulants (such as caffeine, amphetamines or other weight-loss supplements)
theophylline, used to treat asthma, airway spasms or COPD

Currently, the FDA has recommended that patients stop taking 14 varieties of Hydroxycut due to the incidence of severe, life-threatening side effects. The only Hydroxycut product not affected by the May 2009 Hydroxycut recall is Hydroxycut Cleanse.

Can I Use Hydroxycut with Antibiotics?

Taking Hydroxycut with antibiotics won't decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotics. However, because antibiotics tend to increase the concentration of caffeine in the blood, using Hydroxycut with antibiotics can lead to symptoms of caffeine overdose, including:

disturbances in normal thought or speech
insomnia
irregular heartbeat
nervousness

Combining Hydroxycut with antibiotics may also increase patients' risk of developing serious Hydroxycut side effects, including:

cardiovascular disorders
liver damage
rhabdomyolysis (a rare condition in which muscle deterioration can lead to kidney failure)
seizures

To minimize the risk of these health complications, it's essential that patients discuss their complete medical history with their doctors before starting any new medication or dietary supplement.

Hydroxycut and Antidepressants

Because both Hydroxycut and antidepressants are stimulants, it's not recommended that patients take these two medications simultaneously. As with antibiotics, use of Hydroxycut and antidepressants can lead to symptoms of extreme caffeine intake, which are listed above.

Antidepressants not indicated for use with Hydroxycut include:

Celexa
Lexapro
Luvox
Paxil
Prozac
Zoloft

Hydroxycut Green Tea

One of the natural ingredients Hydroxycut contains is green tea extract, which is a stimulant. Consequently, drinking green tea while taking Hydroxycut will – like antibiotics and antidepressants – increase patients' risk of becoming excessively stimulated and experienced negative health complications.

When using Hydroxycut, it's essential to monitor use of any other stimulant medications, whether they are over-the-counter products or prescription drugs.

However, if patients develop serious Hydroxycut side effects regardless of the other medications they are taking, they should:

Seek emergency medical care to prevent further health complications
Follow through with all prescribed treatments for the best chances of recovery
