The makers of the popular weight loss products, Hydroxycut, recalled 14 of its products May 1, 2009 following reports of injuries and one Hydroxycut death. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the death of a 19-year-old Hydroxycut user and several other cases of liver damage among dieters and bodybuilders who were using the Hydroxycut-branded products.
Immediately following the FDA announcement, which warned consumers of the potential health risks associated with Hydroxycut use, the makers of the weight loss supplements, Iovate Health Sciences, voluntarily recalled its products responsible for the injuries.
To date, there has only been one reported Hydroxycut death. However, the potential Hydroxycut side effects may become fatal if left untreated. The most severe Hydroxycut side effects that could potentially result in death include:
The FDA did note in their Hydroxycut warning letter that there have been 23 reports of liver failure in addition to the single Hydroxycut death. The letter also noted that even though the injury and death rate among Hydroxycut users is low, consumers should not be subjected to the possible injuries.
Some Hydroxycut products contain caffeine while others are caffeine free. The caffeine free weight loss pills contain Gymnema Sylvestre Extract which is supposed to help promote normal blood sugar levels.
Because some of the recalled Hydroxycut products contain caffeine and some do not, the cause of deaths and injuries cannot be attributed to too high of a dose of caffeine. In fact, the FDA is still investigating the ingredients in Hydroxycut to determine what is causing liver failure among users, as the exact cause is unknown.
Individuals who have used or are still using Hydroxycut products need to be aware of the symptoms associated with liver damage, so in the event they do begin to experience liver damage they will know to seek medical attention immediately. The most common symptoms of liver failure include:
If you or a loved one has taken any form of Hydroxycut, you should watch out for the listed symptoms. In the event that you should experience any of the above symptoms, you should visit your doctor immediately and let him/her know your history with the dietary supplements. If the symptoms are ignored and liver damage takes place, the results could be fatal.
If your loved one died after taking Hydroxycut, you may be eligible to file a wrongful death Hydroxycut lawsuit against the makers and distributors of the diet pills. It is important to note that manufacturing companies such as Iovate have a responsibility to American consumers and are liable for personal injuries and deaths resulting from their products.
Surviving family members should discuss their situation with an experienced Hydroxycut attorney who will help them recover compensation for any unpaid medical bills, funeral and burial costs.
