"Hydroxycut Complete 7-Day Cleanse" is a product made by Iovate Health Sciences and marketed (by companies such as MuscleTech and DAB Nutrition) as pills to take for one week to clean one's body of toxins. This particular Hydroxycut product is not among the 14 products recalled by Iovate in May 2009. However, all of the Hydroxycut product line was called into question when the FDA issued a statement in May 2009 explaining that at least 23 people had incurred serious liver damage and one young man had been killed by their use of Hydroxycut products.
Hydroxycut Complete 7-Day Cleanse is advertised as a "scientifically designed" and "doctor formulated" set of rapid-release caplets with "a spectrum of beneficial ingredients" that will easily and gently cleanse a user's digestive system, colon and liver. There is essentially no way that a consumer can check on the truth of these statements, or on the effectiveness and safety of Hydroxycut, or of all of the ingredients in this product.
The Food and Drug Administration's advisory stated that, "Although the liver damage appears to be relatively rare, FDA believes consumers should not be exposed to unnecessary risk." The position of Iovate Health Sciences, stated recently on a website called Hydroxycutinformation, is that
"… out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our top priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products."
Indeed, millions of people use dietary supplements and other weight-loss or "cleansing" products that are largely unregulated by the FDA, and when enough people are injured or killed by a product or its ingredients, the FDA finally musters the manpower and political will to send out a warning about it — as is the case, for instance, with the ingredient 'ephedra' that used to be in Hydroxycut cleanse products.
Many of these products have arcane, even bizarre ingredients that have been culled from a variety of sources such as flowers, seeds, leaves and other plant parts — unstudied, unproven ingredients that may also not be monitored for simple quality control, let alone examined in a clinical or laboratory setting.
