Skin care products used to treat discolorations, such as a bleaching cream or acne cream, have been linked to a cancer called acute myelogenous leukemia. If you are a former user of bleaching cream containing hydroquinone 4%, you have been exposed to high levels of a possible carcinogen. Anyone who has developed leukemia following long term use of hydroquinone products may have an injury claim against the manufacturer and should contact one of our hydroquinone lawyers.
There are several different manufacturers and dozens of hydroquinone products on the market. Hydroquinone products are sold in both over the counter and prescription strengths. The prescription strengths usually had active ingredient concentrations of hydroquinone 4%.
Bleaching cream is used to clear up discolorations caused by the over production of the skin pigment melanin. These can include freckles, age spots and splotches caused by Melasma. While Melasma generally only affects pregnant women, any type of hyperpigmentation can be treated with a bleaching cream. They work by limiting the production of melanin, and are applied directly to the affected area.
Acne cream which contains hydroquinone 4% or less is actually used to treat the aftermath of a breakout rather than the pimples themselves. The acne cream is used to treat brown spots which take the place of the acne after it heals. Without the treatment by hydroquinone products the discolorations can last up to two years.
Hydroquinone products that are sold over the counter are not as strong as the hydroquinone 4% skin care products available by prescription. The over the counter versions of the bleaching cream are usually 2% or less. While hydroquinone 4% products obviously offer more exposure to the cancer causing agent in the acne cream or bleaching cream, the over the counter skin care products, such as hydroquinone 2%, carry similar risks.
If you or a family member is a former user of a hydroquinone-containing product and has developed acute myelogenous leukemia, contact a hydroquinone lawyer for help. The use of a skin care product should not cost consumers their long-term health. The consequences of these products can be life threatening, and the manufacturers should be held accountable.
