Bleaching cream is used to treat discolorations in the skin and usually contains hydroquinone.
Most users of bleaching cream are unaware that there is a serious cancer risk. Hydroquinone cancer (acute myelogenous leukemia) can be fatal if untreated. Any former user who has developed acute myelogenous leukemia should contact a lawyer about the possibility of filing a hydroquinone lawsuit to seek compensation.
Upon initial approval of hydroquinone bleaching cream in 1982, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) listed it as "generally recognized as safe and effective." However, in 2006 the FDA revoked this classification due to the possible hydroquinone cancer risk. A cancer link was found in animal studies and later studies suggested an increased risk for humans.
Despite the risks, the FDA continues to allow bleaching cream to be sold over the counter and via prescription, pending further studies. The specific type of cancer that is believed to be caused by bleaching creams is acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Hydroquinone can cause chromosomal changes in cells within the bone marrow which cause the disease.
Acute myelogenous leukemia affects bone marrow and blood. Bone marrow is responsible for the production of blood, and in this disease it produces abnormal white blood cells that never mature. They collect in the marrow, and affect the production of healthy white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.
White blood cells fight off infections and disease, platelets are responsible for blood clotting and red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. When these functions are compromised, as a result of acute myelogenous leukemia, patients will likely experience symptoms including:
Acute myelogenous leukemia can be life-threatening if untreated. Chemotherapy is usually an effective treatment for patients. Unfortunately, relapse can occur in roughly 70 percent of all patients. Bone marrow transplants are sometimes performed to prevent relapse. Over 1 percent of annual cancer deaths are due to acute myelogenous leukemia.
If you have developed AML and have a history of using bleaching creams, you should speak with an experienced attorney about the possibility of filing a lawsuit to seek compensation. Many consumers have used products without knowing the risks. Our attorneys believe that the manufacturers of dangerous products should be held accountable.
