Hydroquinone 4% cream is the prescription strength version of over-the-counter bleaching creams used to treat skin discolorations. In recent years it has been discovered that the side effects of bleaching creams can include a risk of cancer. Hydroquinone 4% creams are twice as potent as over-the-counter versions.
Hydroquinone 4% cream is prescribed for serious discolorations of the skin, usually on the face. One such condition is known as Melasma and occurs in pregnant women, causing dark splotches to form around the lips, nose, and forehead. Hydroquinone 4% can lessen the effects, and in many cases remove discoloration. Bleaching creams are also prescribed occasionally to treat acne scars, which are discolorations that follow a severe acne breakout.
Discolorations of the skin are caused by an overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of both hair and skin. When it is over produced it can cause blemishes ranging between freckles and age spots to Melasma. When applied to an area of discoloration the hydroquinone works by breaking down the existing melanin and hinders the further production of more pigment.
There are other side effects of using hydroquinone 4%, which can include:
However, unless these are allergic reactions, which can be quite serious, these side effects are minor.
Bleaching creams that contain hydroquinone have been linked to an increased risk of the development of a type of cancer called acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This is the most serious potential side effect.
Acute myelogenous leukemia causes the bone marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, which then hinder the production of healthy blood cells and platelets. Patients suffer blood clotting problems and are vulnerable to infections.
If you are suffering from the serious side effects of Hydroquinone 4%, you need to contact an attorney to protect your rights. While acute myelogenous leukemia is treatable when diagnosed early, treatment can be painful, intense and expensive.
