The heparin ingredients from China (specifically, Changzhou, China) went to an American-based heparin supplier named Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL), which in turn supplied the heparin to the major corporation Baxter International. Baxter provides about half of the heparin used every year in the U.S. Heparin is a blood thinning drug used by more than 10 million patients each year.
Heparin from China is one more product from that country that has been recalled in recent years due to safety concerns. The quality control systems in China have been the subject of much criticism of late in the U.S., which imports billions of dollars’ worth of products from China.
