Produced by Merck & Co., Gardasil is a vaccine that prevents females from contracting the human papillomavirus (HPV) for up to four years. In the U.S., Gardasil is currently only approved for use in females between 9 and 26 years old.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still evaluating whether Gardasil vaccinations are safe and useful for men and for women over 27 years old.

First approved by the FDA in 2006, Gardasil vaccinates against the following strains of HPV:

• 6 and 11, which cause about 90 percent of all instances of genital warts
• 16 and 18, which are responsible for around 70 percent of all cervical cancer cases (These HPV strains can also cause vaginal, penile and anal cancer).

Gardasil HPV Vaccine Info: Vaccine Schedule and Efficacy

Gardasil HPV vaccine doses are administered over a course of 3-injections within a 6-month period. Ideally, the vaccination schedule for Gardasil injections is as follows:

• Injection 1 occurs at any point between age 9 and 26.
• Gardasil vaccine 2 occurs two months following the first injection.
• Gardasil vaccine 3 occurs six months following the first injection.

Should a female miss a scheduled dose of Gardasil, it's important that she receive the missed dose as soon as possible.

Experts recommend setting appointments for the 2nd and 3rd Gardasil vaccines upon receiving the first injection, so as to ensure that the series of Gardasil doses are received in a timely manner.

When taken as instructed, Gardasil is 100 percent effective at preventing HPV for up to 4 years. Follow-up studies are currently evaluating whether Gardasil:

• can be effective for longer than 4 years
• will be more effective over longer periods of time if coupled with booster shots.

Gardasil HPV Vaccine Side Effects

Tragically, Gardasil has been associated with some rare but serious side effects, including:

• Bells Palsy, facial paralysis
• blood clots (If left untreated, blood clots can result in potentially fatal complications, including heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism.)
• epilepsy
• Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a nervous system disease that can eventually cause severe weakness and paralysis
• miscarriage
• severe allergic reaction (Symptoms of severe allergic reaction will develop within 15 minutes of receiving a Gardasil injection).

Symptoms of severe Gardasil side effects may include:

• abnormal vaginal bleeding
• breathing difficulties
• facial and/or tongue swelling
• general weakness throughout the body
• hives and/or skin rash
• inability to control certain muscles
• leg cramps
• loss of sensitivity of feeling
• redness, swelling or increased sensitivity in a localized area of the body
• seizures.
