What is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium is a kind of dye, or contrasting agent, that is mixed with water and injected into a patient before they receive an MRI or MRA to make the scan result more readable. Recent research has shown a strong link between Gadolinium and the development of an extremely rare disease known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients who have existing kidney problems. NSF is a serious disease characterized by the hardening of various organs. The condition typically affects the skin and may cause severe debilitation. What is NSF?

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a rare condition in which large areas of the skin—usually at the extremities—harden and become raised. Some internal organs may be affected as well. Other symptoms of the condition include:

Inhibited movement
Muscle weakness
