drug_recall fosamaxRecent research shows that patients who are taking the drug Fosamax may be at risk for a rare but serious bone disease known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Doctors at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center discovered the link between osteonecrosis and Fosamax after conducting a study to determine the cause of jaw lesions found in a cluster of cancer patients. The research revealed that the cancer patients who had developed ONJ shared one commonality: They had all received bisphosphonate therapy.
Fosamax is a bisphosphonate drug used in the treatment of debilitating bone diseases such as osteoporosis and Paget''s disease. Fosamax is also commonly used to treat patients whose cancer has metastasized to the bone, which explains the link between cancer patients taking bisphosphonates like Fosamax and the development of ONJ.
Merck''s Liability
The link between osteonecrosis and Fosamax has prompted the FDA to request the makers of the drug, Merck, to add a warning label . Merck has yet to comply with the FDA''s request, and many are concerned that Merck has deliberately concealed the link between osteonecrosis and Fosamax. In fact, attorneys at a product liability law firm in Florida filed suit against the company in April 2006 for this very reason. If successful, the claim could receive class action status, allowing the attorneys to represent over ten million Fosamax users.
