Fosamax is a prescription drug that was created to aid in the healing of osteoporosis and other bone deterioration conditions. Fosomax is a non-hormonal drug belonging to the bisphosphonate family and has a list of associated side effects that are not uncommon compared to any other prescription drug of its kind. However, in 2004 the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons published findings linking Fosamax, and drugs similar to Fosamax, with a rare but serious condition called Osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis, or Dead Jaw, is the dying of bone tissue in the jawbone. This usually occurs following a minor trauma or surgery in which the bone is exposed. Osteonecrosis has also been known to cause infection and fracture. As a result of this condition, long-term antibiotics and/or surgery are required to treat this condition. The most shocking revelation was after a lawsuit filed in April 2006 revealed the FDA asked Merck, the maker of Fosamx, to add a stronger warning label on the prescription drug and the company failed to comply.
