drug_recall fosamaxFosamax brought Merck some $3 billion in sales in 2006 alone, but the drug will lose its patent protection in February 2008. Despite the success of this product for Merck, increasing numbers of women who have taken Fosamax have reported bone fractures. More than 300 lawsuits based on Fosamax bone problems have been filed already.
Fosamax & Osteonecrosis
A link between Fosamax treatment and ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw) has been well documented and is, in fact, the basis of most of the legal action taken against Merck. ONJ is a disfiguring bone condition that rarely occurs in the general population. Its symptoms include:
Fosamax & Bone Fractures
In January 2008, lawyers filed the first Fosamax lawsuit based on bone fractures that do not involve the jaw. A 53-year-old woman who took Fosamax as prescribed for eight years developed stress fractures in her leg bones that eventually led to debilitating pain and the need for a cane. Studies have yet to show a definitive link between Fosamax use and bone fracture risk, but bone loss and damage are well-known risks of Fosamax treatment.
Benefit vs. Risk of Fosamax
Fosamax belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates, which are administered to maintain or improve the density of bones. Fosamax was designed to reduce the activity of the cells that cause bone loss. However, many medical experts contend that Fosamax provides little benefit, and that it can even increase the risk of bone fractures if it is taken for years at a time.
Fosamax is unusual in that once it is consumed, it stays in the body for up to 10 years. Moreover, as a treatment for osteoporosis, the normal course of treatment with Fosamax is years, even decades, as a woman ages.
