Side Effects of Fosamax®

Fosamax® (alendronate) is a medication prescribed to combat osteoporosis and prevent fractures of the bones. It is in a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These drugs are intended primarily to increase bone mass and reduce the risk of fracture in patients with osteoporosis.

Ironically, instead of protecting bone, Fosamax® has been found to be causing some serious side effects including jaw bone death, bone fractures and possible atrial fibrillation (a potentially serious abnormal heart beat).

Death of jaw bone tissue is also known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). This usually occurs in patients with poor oral hygiene, active dental disease or those having a dental procedure such as having a tooth pulled, dental implants, or other kinds of oral surgery. It occurs when bone tissue breaks down (a normal process) faster than it is built. This condition is characterized by:

• Pain
• Swelling
• Infection
• Exposed bone

Osteonecrosis is also known as avascular necrosis, aseptic necrosis, and ischemic necrosis.

Unusual fractures of the upper portion of the femur (thigh bone). These fractures:

• Have an unusual conformation
• Happen extremely easily
• Occur most often in persons taking Fosamax for extended periods of time (studies showed in patients taking the drug from between 18 months and ten years)
• Often occur in both legs
• Are slow to heal

Common Side Effects of Fosamax®

Other, less serious and more common side effects of Fosamax® include:

• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Gas
• Constipation
• Bloating or fullness in the stomach
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Swelling of the joints, hands, or legs

The number of lawsuits against Merck, the manufacturer of Fosamax®, has been increasing. By the end of March 2010, about 1,039 cases were pending, which included approximately 1,417 plaintiff groups.

A Walton Beach, Florida, woman 71, received an $8 million award in June 2010 from Merck for her ONJ. The trial was considered a “bellwether” or test case trial. The first trial of this case ended in a mistrial in September 2009 when the jury deadlocked, unable to agree if Fosamax® was the cause of the woman’s ONJ and if Merck should be held liable.
