Visicol Medication

Generically known as sodium phosphate, Visicol medication is an oral laxative prescribed to cleanse the bowels prior to a colonoscopy, x-rays and/or surgery. Visicol is available in tablet form and is produced by Salix Pharmaceuticals, a company that also makes a competing bowel cleanser known as OsmoPrep.

As with other phosphate-based laxatives, Visicol has been linked to some serious, potentially fatal side effects, including kidney failure and arrhythmia.

To alert the public of the risks associated with Visicol medication, in December 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated that Salix Pharmaceuticals include “black box” warnings on all Visicol packaging. These warning are the most serious level of FDA warnings, as they indicate that a drug can cause life-threatening side effects.

How to Take Visicol Before a Colonoscopy

Visicol directions instruct patients to take:

3 Visicol tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquid every 15 minutes on the night before the procedure. Twenty tablets should be taken in total.
3 Visicol tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquid every 15 minutes on the day of the procedure, starting between 3 and 5 hours before the procedure is supposed to take place. Again, a total of 20 Visicol pills should be taken.

It's important that patients stay hydrated when taking Visicol medication, as dehydration can increase the likelihood of developing severe Visicol side effects.

Additionally, Visicol instructions indicate that no other laxative agents should be taken while on a course of Visicol.

Side Effects Visicol Tablets

While most Visicol patients will only develop mild, if any, side effects when taking this medication, on rare occasion, the following severe side effects have been reported after taking Visicol:

acute phosphate nephropathy
arrhythmias
difficulty urinating
epilepsy
no bowel movement after use
rectal bleeding
kidney failure
severe allergic reaction
