If you’ve ever had your colon checked, you may have taken Fleet phospho soda to prepare for the colonoscopy beforehand. Fleet phospho soda is a saline laxative comprised of sodium phosphate, a compound that helps to dehydrate the patient’s bowels enough to cleanse the colon before the procedure. This is so the doctor will have an unobstructed view of the colon for the procedure and ensure an accurate screening.
Before the screening, you will have to purchase two bottles of Fleet phospho soda from the local pharmacy. A full day before the procedure, you will be advised not to eat any solid foods. Your entire diet the day before the exam will consist of phospho soda and clear liquids such as:
Starting the evening before, you’ll begin taking the phospho soda in three separate servings 10 minutes apart. While it’s important to drink at least 32 ounces of clear liquid before you go to bed (four 8 ounce glasses of clear liquid), stop drinking fluids an hour before you go to bed.
The morning of the procedure, take any prescribed medication (blood pressure or heart medications) at least 30 minutes before you take the phospho soda laxative. You will take the remaining 8 ounces of phospho soda in two separate servings 10 minutes apart. Toss the remaining phospho soda and drink three-four glasses (24-32 oz) of a clear beverage. Stop drinking beverages an hour before you appointment.
Since you’ll mix your own laxative cocktail, it’s important to mix the right dosage; any more and serious consequences can occur. Dilute the 1 tablespoon of phospho soda solution with 8 ounces of clear liquid. Clear liquids include ginger ale, Gatorade (not red or purple, as it can look like blood during the exam), or apple juice.
The Fleet Company, manufacturers of the Fleet Phospho Soda have issued a recall for the Over-the-counter phospho soda laxative products. They are now available by prescription. As such, it is important to follow the instructions of your doctor when taking this solution, as any overdose can have serious consequences from severe dehydration to acute kidney failure.
