Produced by Salix Pharmaceuticals, OsmoPrep medication is a colon cleanser used to empty the bowels prior to a colonoscopy, surgery and other medical procedures. OsmoPrep is generically known as sodium phosphate, comes in the form of tablets and should only be taken by patients over the age of 18.

As with other sodium biphosphate colon cleansers, however, OsmoPrep pills have been reported to cause some rare but potentially life-threatening side effects.

• Take these pills only as directed, as overdosing on OsmoPrep tablets (whether taking too many pills or taking them for longer than directed) increases the likelihood of developing serious health complications.
• Stay hydrated with clear liquids, as dehydration is a risk factor for severe OsmoPrep side effects.

OsmoPrep Complications

Serious OsmoPrep side effects include:

• acute phosphate nephropathy (a serious kidney condition in which phosphate crystals form in the kidneys and significantly impair their function)
• arrhythmias
• difficulty urinating
• no bowel movement after use
• rectal bleeding
• renal failure (which results if acute phosphate nephropathy is left untreated)
• seizures
• severe allergic reaction

Without prompt treatment, these OsmoPrep side effects can cause further health complications and, in the most severe cases, death.

Risk Factors for OsmoPrep Side Effects

Patients with the highest risk of developing OsmoPrep complications including those who are over 55 years old and/or have a history of:

• bowel perforation or obstruction

• liver disease
• stomach surgery
