The saline laxative Fleet Phospho Soda has gained public attention after being associated with serious injuries among users. Makers of the product, C.B. Fleet Company, Inc., continue to appear in the news as injury lawsuits continue to mount.
While one would think that a bowel cleanser recommended to patients by a physician or pharmacist would be completely safe, some patients who have taken the saline laxative, Fleet Phospho Soda, have suffered severe injuries such as irreversible kidney damage and renal failure. At one time available over-the-counter, Fleet Phospho Soda was commonly used as a laxative to prepare for colonoscopy procedures or to lose weight.
Oral laxatives, including phospho soda, have been used for over a century to induce bowel movements in those who are constipated. With the advent of the medically recommended colonoscopy, patients have been advised to take a laxative before the procedure to clear the bowel and allow the physician to clearly see any abnormalities.
In 2005, a group of medical researchers found a correlation between Fleet Phospho Soda, as well as other laxatives containing sodium phosphate, and severe kidney damage leading to ultimate kidney failure. When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised a red flag about Fleet Phospho Soda and issued a warning about the danger of the product, the Fleet Corporation responded by recalling its products from the shelves. Since the recall, Fleet Phospho Soda has become available only by prescription.
Over the last few years, many lawsuits have sprung up around the country from patients afflicted with acute phosphate nephropathy. For instance, one plaintiff in New York had to have a kidney removed 6 months after she took Fleet Phospho Soda.
Though injured patients around the country seek damages from the company for the suffering and lasting kidney damage incurred, the company claims that their product is perfectly safe when taken in the correct dosage with plenty of clear liquids. Representatives of the patients say that the Fleet Company marketed the product deceptively and labeled it with incorrect directions that called for the product to be ingested at twice the dosage of FDA guidelines for oral laxatives.
If you or a loved one has suffered kidney damage or failure as a result of taking Fleet Phospho Soda, it is important that you contact a Fleet Phospho Soda attorney with the experience to guide you through the legal process. You may be entitled to compensation for your physical, emotional and financial losses.
