Fleet Phospho Soda is a saline laxative used as a bowel cleansing solution to clear the intestines before a colonoscopy. Consisting of sodium phosphate, it dehydrates the intestines, encourages the formation of kidney stones, and is associated with kidney damage and failure.

Fleet Phospho Soda FDA Warning

After several studies drew a strong correlation between Fleet Phospho Soda and severe kidney damage, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the product. The FDA issues such warnings for drugs that are proven by clinical studies to cause or increase the risk of injury to the body as a result of taking it.

Since Fleet Phospho Soda is associated with phosphate nephropathy — or severe kidney damage — the FDA issued a Black Box Warning detailing the risks involved. A black box warning is the highest level of warning from the FDA.

Fleet Phospho Soda Alert

While Fleet Phospho Soda has received most of the attention due to the risk of consequences, other oral sodium phosphate solutions carry similar risks. These other oral solutions include Visicol and OsmoPrep.
