Fleet phospho soda is an over-the-counter laxative used to prepare the bowels for a colonoscopy procedure. Sold under the generic names sodium phosphate and sodium biphosphate, this saline laxative dries out the colon, forcing the body to produce bowel movements. This is supposed to free the bowels from obstruction, allowing for a clear view of the colon.
Before your colonoscopy, the doctor will give you directions to follow and you’ll have to purchase two 8oz bottles of Fleet phospho soda at a pharmacy. Starting the night before, you will be required to drink only clear liquids and eat clear foods. Examples include:
Follow the directions to mix 1 tablespoon of phospho soda with 8oz of water. You’ll repeat this procedure a total of 5 times, giving yourself 3 doses over a time period of 10 minutes. The following morning, you’ll repeat this procedure again, this time giving yourself 2 doses over a time period of 10 minutes.
NOTE: It is important to drink plenty of fluids as phospho soda can cause severe dehydration, kidney damage and acute kidney failure.
As your body becomes dehydrated, it begins to expel calcium. Your kidneys act as a colander, straining out larger particles so that liquid can move into the bladder. Calcium builds up in the kidneys at an alarming rate, forming solid matter or ‘stones.’ Too many of these stones and your kidneys will shut down, causing other health problems or even death.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert about Fleet phospho soda in December 2008 because so many patients reported kidney failure and other adverse side effects after taking it. The Fleet Company issued a recall soon after, pulling the product from the shelves.
Regardless of the recall and concern by the FDA, the company asserts that those patients who suffered kidney failure did so because they didn’t follow the directions.
