Prior to a colonoscopy, you will have to completely empty your bowels to prepare for the procedure. To do this, your doctor will advise you to take Fleet phospho soda the night before and the morning of the procedure.
Available over-the-counter, Fleet phospho soda is a saline laxative used to cleanse the bowels. It contains sodium phosphate; salts that encourage the bowels to excrete multiple bowel movements over a short period of time, usually 1-6 hours after you take your first dose.
A typical dosage is one tablespoon of phospho soda mixed in with 8 ounces of water or other clear fluid. This mixture is taken three times in the span of ten minutes at night, and twice in the span of ten minutes the next morning.
It is also important to drink 24-32 ounces of clear fluids from when you begin taking phospho soda up to an hour before the procedure. Clear liquids include water, clear fruit juices, clear broth, and Gatorade — basically anything that you could read a newspaper through. It is important that none of the fluids are red or purple as these shades will give the false impression that there is blood in the bowels.
There are risks associated with Fleet phospho soda. It doesn’t just taste bad; it can also cause severe kidney damage. It is imperative that you follow dosing instructions. Phospho soda can be dangerous if taken incorrectly or in high amounts.
Sodium phosphate dehydrates the bowels, causing your body to excrete calcium from the intestines. This calcium ends up in the kidneys and collects to form stones. These stones can cause kidney damage, acute kidney failure or even death.
Though phospho soda has been used for the past 100 years as a laxative, many people have suffered permanent kidney damage or kidney failure because of it. The C.B. Fleet Company, the manufacturer of Fleet phospho soda, issued a voluntary recall of this product as well as their EZ Prep product, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that these products were too dangerous to use.
If you or a loved one has been harmed after taking Fleet Phospho Soda, you may be entitled to compensation fro your injuries and losses. For more information about your legal rights, contact a product liability lawyer today.
