Fleet Phospho Soda attorneys around the country are investigating lawsuits on behalf of patients who have suffered severe injuries after using the saline laxative. Plaintiffs are seeking compensation for damages including medical costs and pain and suffering.
Commonly used to prepare the bowels for a colonoscopy, Fleet Phospho Soda is a saline laxative. Though popular among patients, it has a dark side — It is associated with severe kidney problems including kidney damage, kidney failure and even death.
The sodium phosphate in Fleet Phospho Soda can potentially create an imbalance of electrolytes in the body. Such an imbalance can cause serious problems including dehydration and painful kidney stones. While some side effects, such as dehydration, are reversible and can be avoided by drinking lots of clear fluids, others like kidney failure are not.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about Fleet Phospho Soda after studies showed a direct correlation between the product and kidney damage.
In response, C.B. Fleet Company, Inc. ordered a recall on the product, having pharmacies pull the product from the U.S. market. Later, they made Fleet Phospho Soda available only by prescription. After the company voluntarily recalled the product due to the FDA warning and supporting studies, it maintained that any serious side effects associated Fleet Phospho Soda was due to patient error. Fleet Company argued that injured patients failed to follow the directions exactly — either they took too much of the product or they didn’t drink enough clear fluids while taking it.
Due to the lack of warning about the serious side effects associated with Fleet Phospho Soda, many patients who have suffered kidney damage have filed lawsuits seeking compensation for their injuries.
With the help of personal injury attorneys who specialize in this type of litigation, some plaintiffs have joined forces with other patients in class action lawsuits. If you or a loved one has suffered kidney damage or failure as a side effect of taking Fleet Phospho Soda, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit and recover damages.
