Fleet Phospho Soda Alternatives

Fleet Phospho Soda is a bowel cleanser containing sodium phosphate that is manufactured by the CB Fleet Company. It is an oral saline liquid laxative commonly used by patients as a colonoscopy prep to clear the intestines of obstruction.

While phospho soda has been used as a laxative for a century, it is associated with kidney damage and renal failure. The product contains elevated amounts of sodium, which not only forces the body to form a bowel movement, but also dehydrates the intestines and disturbs the balance of electrolytes necessary for digestive function. This condition is known as phosphate nephropathy and it can be extremely dangerous.

Fleet Phospho Soda was sold over-the-counter until the FDA issued a warning about its safety. The FDA Fleet Phospho Soda warning was based off several reports of renal failure and kidney damage. C.B. Fleet Company responded with a voluntary recall of the products, making it only available through a prescription from a doctor.
