Fleet Phospho Soda, generically known as sodium phosphate and sodium phosphate, is used to clean the bowels before and after intestinal procedures including surgery, x-rays and endoscopy and to treat constipation.

Manufactured by C.B. Fleet Laboratories, the laxative products are sold under the following brand names:

• Fleet Enema
• Fleet Enema for Children
• OsmoPrep
• Visicol

How to take Fleet Phospho Soda

Individuals who use a Fleet phospho soda product are advised to use as indicated on the label or as instructed by their doctors.

Note: Never increase the recommended dosage of Fleet phosphor products; doing so may increase your risk for developing serious health conditions and side effects.

To keep hydrated while using these products, patients should drink a full 8-ounce glass of water every time they use the medication, unless directed otherwise by their doctor. For the best results, individuals are encouraged to take the oral liquid on an empty stomach in the morning, at east 30 minutes before eating. Individuals can also take it before bed, if they prefer.

Things to Know Before Taking Fleet Phospho Soda

It is important to only take the recommended doses of these products. The products designed to be inserted into the rectum should not be taken orally. If taken correctly, they should work within 15 minutes.

If you feel like you may have overdosed on a Fleet Phospho Soda product, it is important to seek attention from your doctor immediately.

Be Careful When Treating Children

The majority of the products are not intended for children. There are specially-made products designed for children, but when using the children-products, it is important to consider the following:

• Fleet Enema for children is designed for children between the ages of 2 and 11 (do not use an enema on children under 2 unless directed by your doctor)
• Never use an adult-strength Fleet Enema in children under the age of 12
• Fleet Phospho Soda oral liquid laxatives can be given to children who are 5 or older, but should never be given to children under 5
• Visicol, the oral tablets should never be given to a child under the age of 18

Fleet Phospho Soda Side Effects

There have been several side effects linked to Fleet Phospho Soda products, including:

• Nausea, vomiting
• Bloating, stomach pain
• Unexplained headache
• Rectal bleeding
• Rectal sores or ulcers
• Seizures, convulsions
• Irregular heartbeat
• Urinating irregularities
• Drowsiness, confusion
• Increased thirst, inability to have a bowel movement even after treatment

Allergic reactions can include a combination of any of the following:

• Hives
• Difficulty breathing
• Facial swelling
• Swelling of the tongue, lips or throat

Fleet Phospho Soda: Kidney Damage

Fleet Phospho Soda has also been linked to severe kidney damage. Phospho soda can cause an increase in the levels of phosphate salts in the kidneys which results in a condition known as acute phosphate nephropathy (APN). APN is a serious condition, marked by symptoms such as: fatigue, lethargy, decreased urine production, and swelling of the feet, ankles and legs.
