Fentanyl Recall

Activis Inc. recalled all lots of its Fentanyl transdermal system patches in early 2008. The voluntary recall followed a Feb. 12, 2008 Duragesic recall issued by Johnson & Johnson (J&J). Both recalls were based on a risk of a potentially fatal overdose of the active ingredient, Fentanyl, among patients treated with the pain patches.

The Duragesic pain patches were recalled due to a possible cut in the side of the drug reservoir within the patch, which would allow fentanyl gel to be released in fatal doses. Fentanyl patches are designed to slowly release pain medication over a three day period; however, if too much of the active ingredient is released at one time, patients are at risk of serious injuries, including:

  • Respiratory depression
  • Death

Some 32 million Duragesic pain patches were involved in the J&J recall.

Other Fentanyl Injuries and Deaths

The 2008 fentanyl recalls were not the first actions to bring attention to the defective pain patches. Several reports of injuries and deaths among fentanyl users have surfaced in previous years. In fact, in February 2004, Janssen Pharmaceutica Products, owned by J&J, issued a recall of its 75mcg/hr Duragesic patches due to a cut in the patches’ seal.

And, in July 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began an investigation after 120 fentanyl deaths had been reported.
