"Tarsal tunnel syndrome" has been diagnosed in many railroad workers. The syndrome can be caused by the constant vibrations and other physical trauma that railroad workers often experience as a daily part of their jobs over a period of months or years.
The Federal Employer's Liability Act (FELA) is similar to workers' compensation, covering only employees of railroad companies. When a railroad employee is injured on the job or develops an illness due to conditions at the job, the employee can file a FELA claim for a legal remedy — including financial compensation from a negligent railroad company for losses such as:
Railroad workers should be aware of the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome:
These symptoms are caused by vibration and excessive pressure put on the posterior tibial nerve, which runs from the inside of the ankle to into the foot. The tarsal tunnel is a space on the inside of the ankle that protects the tendons, arteries, veins and nerves — including the posterior tibial nerve. When the tarsal tunnel is continually compressed (squeezed), the nerve can be damaged.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, which occurs in the wrist. As with carpal tunnel syndrome, a "last resort" for treating tarsal tunnel syndrome is surgery. More conservative treatments such as orthopedic shoes, anti-inflammatory drugs, and steroid injections are also available.
Many employees of railroad companies spend a great deal of time on their feet, often on top of machinery, equipment, or parts of a train that are constantly vibrating. Such conditions are conducive for the development of tarsal tunnel syndrome. If you are a railroad worker and you have been diagnosed with tarsal tunnel syndrome — or you suspect that you have this syndrome — talk to an attorney who represents railroad workers with FELA claims. You may be eligible for a FELA remedy that includes financial compensation for your losses.
