What is Exjade?
Exjade ( deferasirox) is a once-a-day oral medication approved by the FDA in 2005 to remove excess iron from body organs of patients whose frequent blood transfusions have caused a buildup of iron. More than 13,000 patients have been treated with Exjade in the U.S.
FDA Concern About Exjade Side Effects
The FDA expressed its concern over the lack of long-term safety data regarding Exjade side effects before the agency approved the drug. The FDA's own database of complications reported after a drug is put on the market was the source of the recent concern over kidney failures and deaths associated with Exjade.
Novartis Acknowledges Exjade Risks
The maker of Exjade, the pharmaceutical giant Novartis AG, has acknowledged the risk of Exjade side effects including acute kidney failure and death. In a letter from Novartis posted on the FDA's website, the company noted that eight cases of acute kidney failure have been reported in Exjade-treated patients. A Novartis spokesman stated that although the Exjade-treated patients who died had pre-existing conditions, it could not rule out Exjade as a contributing factor.
