Erbs Palsy, also referred to as Erb-Duchenne Palsy or Brachial Plexus Paralysis, is a condition in which a birth-related injury results in nerve damage and prevents part or all of the arm(s) from moving.
In most cases, complications during the birthing process (such as excessive pulling on the infant's shoulders or a dramatic strain on the baby's neck) will damage part of the baby's spinal cord and cause erbs palsy.
While some cases of Erbs palsy will resolve themselves as babies grow, others rely on physical therapy and/or surgery to regain part or all of the feeling and control of the affected arm(s) and hand(s).
The symptoms of Erbs palsy will depend on the severity of the condition, as well as whether one or both of the patient's arms are affected. In general, however, common Erbs palsy symptoms include:
In addition to the primary symptoms of Erbs palsy, afflicted individuals may also suffer from secondary symptoms, which are signs of infections or other complications that result from the primary symptoms.
For example, the delayed healing of the skin that is symptomatic of Erbs palsy can cause further complications, as the patient is now more susceptible to infections because his wounds stay open and vulnerable longer than those in healthy individuals.
Secondary symptoms of Erbs palsy include:
Although any portion or the entirety of one or both arm(s) can be affected by Erbs palsy, most cases affect the upper arm, from the shoulder to the elbow. This is due to the fact that nerves directly linked to the spinal cord (and, therefore, those usually the first to get damaged) control this area of the arm.
For the best possible outcomes to Erbs palsy, babies will need to do most of their recovery during their first year of life.
