Ephedra has been a common ingredient found mostly in weight loss pills and to enhance athletic performance. The problems with ephedra have appeared to greatly overshadow any beneficial aspects of the herbal supplement. Ephedra deaths, as well as serious adverse effects like heart attacks, seizures, and strokes have been reported for years, which is why its'' presence on the market has been so controversial.
Ephedra is a natural derivative of ma huang but is a stimulant with similar effects to amphetamines. Due to the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994, the FDA was not able to review the supplement for safety and efficacy and even after ephedra deaths and adverse effects were reported, the FDA was unable to limit or ban sales until a "significant or unreasonably risk of injury" was found. The agency has been criticized for taking years to rule on the supplement despite ephedra deaths.
Several states and sports leagues have grown impatient of the lack of federal ruling and have already banned ephedra because people do not want to hear any additional reports of ephedra deaths. Studies that emerged in November 2003 more than six weeks before its scheduled publication date concluded ephedra deaths and severe health problems could occur. While many people were surprised with the urgency the report was issued, for many consumer groups, medical experts, and legislators, this news is hardly a new finding.
In a Rand Report released in early 2003, a review of about 16,000 adverse reports, the research and development company found there were two ephedra deaths, four heart attacks, nine strokes, one seizure, and five psychiatric cases found. The number of ephedra deaths will continue to climb unless the sales of ephedra-containing products are reduced or eliminated.
