After reports of many illnesses, injuries, and even one death, Boston Scientific Corporation announced that it is recalling all Enteryx units. Boston Scientific is the maker of the units and has asked the medical community to stop performing Enteryx injections. The Enteryx recall took place in late September of 2005.
Enteryx was an injectable liquid polymer that was used to help stop acid reflux by strengthening the walls of the esophagus. Because Enteryx turns into a sponge-like material when entering the body, it is virtually impossible to take out once it is injected.
In the case of the Enteryx death that occurred, an elderly woman''s aorta was punctured and ruptured. The woman died three weeks after the injection and had no obvious signs of being sick. Because it is often unclear as to how damaging the Enteryx injections can be, Boston Scientific felt it was necessary to announce an Enteryx recall.
Any patient who has had an Enteryx injection should seek medical attention immediately for a full checkup. Boston Scientific is willing to pay for any medical problems stemming from Enteryx. Before any forms or papers are signed, however, it is usually a good idea to contact an experienced Enteryx lawyer first. While medical attention should be your first priority, seeking a lawyer to assist you will be of great additional help.
While Enteryx was seen as a success in treating acid reflux, the manner in which it was injected created many serious side effects. The injections were causing damage to other areas of the body. Side effects and symptoms to watch for may include rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, blood pressure drop, neck and chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and shortness of breath.
Patients may have experienced very few side effects if any at all. It is important, therefore, for all patients who have had Enteryx injections to get several medical opinions regarding their health before taking any additional actions.
For peace of mind, it may be a good idea to get legal advice before signing any forms.
