Duragesic Patch Conversion

Produced by the Alza Corporation (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), the Duragesic pain patch is prescribed to treat chronic pain that requires 24-hour relief and that doesn't respond to other pain medications, such as methadone or oxycodone.

Duragesic patches deliver fentanyl, a pain medicine nearly 100 times more potent that morphine, to patients through the skin (transdermally).

Given the potency of Duragesic patches, it's vital that patients:

Discuss their complete medical history with their doctor (including any history of alcohol or drug addiction) before starting a course of Duragesic patch treatment
Only use the Duragesic patch as directed
Never wear patches for more than 72 hours

Duragesic Patch Dosage

The appropriate Duragesic patch dose for a particular patient will depend on:

the type and severity of an individual's condition
an individual's medical history (including his history of using other pain medications)

Duragesic patches typically come in the following doses:

25 mcg/hr (microgram/hour)
50 mcg/hr
75 mcg/hr
100 mcg/hr

Stronger dosed Duragesic patches may be available for particularly severe cases of chronic pain.

The larger the dose of fentanyl delivered, the larger the patch (as of the skin's surface area has to be covered to ensure that larger amounts of pain medication are being absorbed).

Patients should always work closely with their doctors before switching from one pain medication to another. This is particularly important when patients are converting to Duragesic pain patches, as this medication has the potential to cause severe side effects (including arrhythmia, respiratory problems and severe allergic reaction).
