Scios, Inc. is a Fremont California based Pharmaceutical Corporation. In 2003 Scios became a subsidiary of drug giant Johnson & Johnson . In 2001 Scios announced the launch of their primary product Natrecor (nesiritide) used in treating heart disease and heart failure. Natrecor is also used in treating some inflammatory diseases and some forms of cancer.
Natrecor (nesiritide) – The FDA approved Natrecor in 2001 for treating acute congestive heart failure and shortness of breath. Natrecor was only FDA approved for use in emergency rooms and other life-threatening cases. The drug costs $500 a dose. In 2005 allegations about Scios marketing Natrecor for “off-label” uses arose. Off-label means the drug was used for non-FDA approved reasons.
While it generally is not against the law to use an approved drug for off-label reasons, it is illegal for drug companies to market to those specific off-label purposes. Natrecor has many cheaper alternatives, which run about $10 a dose. It is highly unethical for medical professionals to “push” Natrecor on non-emergency cases, especially when other drugs are widely available. It is also illegal for the drug company to market the drug for those uses.
If you have experienced side effects, please contact a Natrecor lawyer to learn more about your legal rights.
