Purdue Pharma is a Stamford Connecticut based pharmaceuticals company. The company primarily manufactures and markets prescription drugs used in treating pain. The company develops sustained-released and long acting pain medicines and manufactures the drug OxyContin (oxycodone HCl).
Drugs manufactured by Purdue Pharma include:
Palladone - In July 2005 Purdue Pharma suspended the marketing of its Palladone (hydromorphone hydrochloride) Capsules after the FDA concluded there was a heightened risk of death due to overdose when the capsules were combined with alcohol. The capsules were prescription extended-release drugs used in treating pain. The FDA approved Palladone in 2004 for managing persistent moderate to severe pain in patients who needed continuous pain management solutions. Palladone Capsules were released in February 2005. Due to the capsules'' long acting method of delivery, they were seen to be hazardous and potentially deadly when combined with alcohol.
OxyContin (oxycodone HCl) - Oxycontin was introduced in 1995 and has repeatedly been linked to patterns of abuse and addiction. Oxycontin contains no “fillers” like Percocet, which is oxycodone and acetaminophen combined. Abusers can therefore easily crush the tablets and obtain the effects of the drug immediately, rather than having its time-release coating wear off in the stomach.
The FDA recently strengthened its warnings about Oxycontin abuse and rewrote several passages on the drug''s label to reflect their new concerns.
Also known as “hillbilly heroin” for its particular abuse rate in the Appalachian region of the US, OxyContin has been linked to several deaths and hundreds, if not thousands, of addiction cases throughout the country.
Lawsuits are on the rise against Purdue Pharma and a recent federal grand jury in Virginia considered indicting the entire company for concealing OxyContin''s potential addictive nature. Another suit against the company has been filed by New York City alleging Purdue illegally inflated the price of their OxyContin pills.
