drug_recall drug_companyOrtho-McNeil is a relatively new pharmaceutical corporation formed out of a merger of resources between Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc. and Janssen Pharmaceutica Products, LP. Based in Raritan, New Jersey, Ortho-McNeil is also a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson .
Ortho-McNeil''s primary concentration is on the manufacturing and testing of drugs used to treat pain, acid reflux and infectious diseases. Their newly created unit PriCara is involved in providing guidance and assistance to Primary Care providers and other health insurance companies.
Notable drugs manufactured by and related to Ortho-McNeil include:
Ortho-Evra – A contraceptive birth control patch for women. The patch is applied directly to the skin and delivers a variable rate of hormones throughout the day. In November of 2005 Ortho-McNeil and Johnson & Johnson issued a warning about the product after studies showed an increase in blood clot risk and deaths related to the patch. To date, the company has not suspended manufacturing or marketing Ortho-Evra.
The patch is dangerous because it elevates the levels of hormones in the women who wear it throughout the day. Birth control pills have a short-lived time period of elevated hormones that tend to decrease over the day.
Ultram ER – A painkiller to be released in 2006 in the US and seen to be a contender for replacing Merck''s Vioxx. Ultram ER received FDA approval in May and September of 2005. The drug is made by a company called Biovail Corp. but is set to become distributed and possibly mass-manufactured by Ortho-McNeil and Johnson & Johnson.
Ultram ER is designed to be a replacement for generic versions of tramadol, manufactured by the German company Grünenthal and whose brand name is Ultram. Tramadol has to be taken six times a day while Ultram ER will have a much lower dosage.
