Novartis International AG is a global pharmaceutical corporation headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. The company was formed in 1996 through the merger of Swiss drug giants Sandoz and Ciba-Giegy. At the time it was the largest corporate merger in the history of the world.
In 1998 controversy about Novartis arose after the company partnered with the UC Berkeley Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. Critics have long contended that the company uses the resources of the school to create and market new products, rather than having the school determine its own focus. The deal lasted for five years and the company paid some $25 million to the department.
Critics also contend that Novartis is quietly including many genetically modified foods, particularly corn and corn derivatives, in products around the world. Many countries have placed bans on such food products and their ingredients.
Novartis AG is, however, largely a pharmaceutical corporation with drugs that are used in transplants, central nervous disorders, heart disease, respiratory problems, dermatology, oncology, and hormone replacement therapies.
Some notable drugs associated with Novartis include:
Foradil – Foradil is an asthma medication that is dispensed through a Foradil Aerolizer. In November 2005 the FDA issued an alert that Foradil could increase the risk of death related to asthma problems. There are warnings that Foradil should not be used as the first or only medication prescribed for asthma, and only after another asthma medication has failed to control the asthma attack.
Lamisil (terbinafine hydrochloride) - Lamisil is sold in tablet form and is prescription medication used in treating surface skin infections like onychomycosis of the toe or fingernails, “jock itch,” and athlete''s foot. A recent study found that Lamisil was linked to a rise in serious liver damage and other side effects.
