Merck & Co. is the name of the US pharmaceutical company formed after World War I when the US confiscated the company from Germany. The practice of confiscation of businesses was common during the World Wars and happened with such large companies as Bayer as well. Merck & Co. is one of the top five drug companies operating in the world. Merck''s ancestor Merck KGaA still operates in Germany and other countries but is prohibited from doing so as “Merck” in the US.
Merck & Co.''s headquarters are in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. The company also operates under the names MSD or Merck Sharp & Dohme in many countries. Merck & Co. has about 70,000 employees who work in 120 countries around the world.
In 2005 the company was involved in serious allegations about its painkiller drug Vioxx that forced the CEO, Raymond Gilmartin, to retire.
Drugs associated with Merck & Co. include:
Vioxx (rofecoxib) – Vioxx was approved by the FDA in 1999 for use in treating symptoms relating to arthritis. The drug was linked to an increased risk for heart disease and heart attacks shortly after its release. Merck & Co. repeatedly denied these links or any covering up of Vioxx''s serious problems, despite the mounting evidence. In 2004 Merck & Co. took Vioxx off the market. In 2005 a jury awarded $253.4 million dollars to a widow of a man believed to have died from taking Vioxx. Several thousand lawsuits are currently being filed as well.
