drug_recall drug_companyJohnson & Johnson is an international pharmaceutical, medical equipment and consumer goods manufacturer and marketer located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Through its branches and 200 owned other companies worldwide, in more than 50 countries, J&J earn about $47 billion in sales annually. The company has over 110,000 employees with about half their workforce located in the United States.
In late 2004 Johnson & Johnson agreed to buy embattled company Guidant for $25.4 billion, whose heart defibrillators were found to be fundamentally faulty and manufactured incorrectly. The deal''s details were resolved in November of 2005 and they are expected to complete the takeover before the end of 2005.
Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ortho-McNeil , based in New Jersey, entered into negotiations in 2005 to market and manufacture Ultram ER, a new painkiller seen by many to be a contender for replacing drugs like Merck''s Vioxx. Ultram ER received FDA approval in May and September of 2005.
In November 2005, Ortho-McNeil and Johnson & Johnson issued a warning over their birth control patch Ortho Evra and its relationship to serious problems developing in women.
Notable Drugs Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson include:
Natrecor (nesiritide) – In 2001 Natrecor became the first drug FDA-approved to treat acute heart failure since 1987. Natrecor is currently in use to treat acutely decompensated congestive heart-failure patients who have severe shortness of breath with minimal activity.
In 2005 The New York Times broke a story essentially saying that Natrecor was being aggressively marketed and prescribed for uses not approved by the FDA. Patients have reported serious side effects from these uses including low blood pressure, kidney problems, and even death. Sales and profits were significantly affected by the news that Natrecor was linked to these side effects.
Fremont, CA biotech firm Scios, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, manufactures the drug. The costs of the drug are significant and run about $500 per dose, compared to $10 per dose for similar medications made by other companies. FDA regulations prohibit drug companies from marketing medications for off-label uses.

Risperdal (risperidone) – Risperdal is the most often prescribed antipsychotic in the US and accounts for about $2.1 billion in sales to Johnson & Johnson. Risperdal is most often used in treating bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, and psychotic depression. Though it hasn''t been FDA-approved to do so, Risperdal is also used in treating autism and Asperger syndrome as well.
In 2003, Johnson & Johnson announced that there was a risk of stroke in patients taking Risperdal and they cautioned providers to look for signs. Side effects also included strokes, stroke-like symptoms, blood clots, and hemorrhaging including severe cases that could lead to death.
Risperdal can also cause tardive dyskinesia (TD), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), and extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). In 2004 the UK''s Committee for the Safety of Medicines issued a warning about risperidone and that it should not be given to patients who were elderly and had dementia.
