drug_recall drug_companyEli Lilly and Company is one of the biggest corporations of any kind in the world and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2004 Eli Lilly had revenues worth $13.9 billion. The company is one of the biggest makers of medications used for treating cancer, depression, heart disease, endocrine disorders, and infectious diseases.
Some notable drugs Eli Lilly Manufactures Include:
Prozac (fluoxetine) – Prozac is the most widely prescribed and used antidepressant medication in the history of the world. In the 1990s Prozac was heavily prescribed for depression, resulting in millions of dollars of lawsuits after serious side effects occurred. Side effects related to Prozac have included suicidal thoughts and actions. This resulted in a “black box” warning to be issued by the FDA. Despite these risks, Prozac is still widely used and prescribed.
A recent controversy involved Eli Lilly''s marketing of Prozac when they mailed free samples out to a number of people''s homes. The people who received the free samples did not request them. Which leads to speculation that Eli Lilly might have illegally obtained them and medical information about them.
In January 2005 the British Medical Journal released internal documents from Eli Lilly suggesting the company knew about a link between Prozac and suicide and psychosis earlier than they claimed to.
Thimerosal – Thimerosal is a compound that contains a small amount of mercury. Thimerosal was a major ingredient in many drugs and biological products, particularly in vaccines. It was determined that there was a link between Thimerosal and the development of autism, ADHD, and other illnesses and that the compound could have caused an epidemic of ADHD particularly in children who had been vaccinated before age six (millions of people).
Zyprexa (olanzapine) – Zyprexa was only the second antipsychotic to win FDA approval and is widely used in treating symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In 2005 Eli Lilly agreed to pay a settlement award expected to be around $1 billion in addition to a $700 million award over allegations that the company covered up information about Zyprexa causing diabetes. The drug is seen as having such side effects as diabetes, hyperglycemia, stroke, weight gain and interacting negatively with insulin.
If you have experienced side effects, please contact a Zyprexa lawyer to learn more about your legal rights.
