Bayer AG is one of the world''s top three drug manufacturers and chemical producers. The German based company was founded in 1863 and is currently headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany. Bayer is most well known for discovering and producing aspirin. Bayer also discovered and produced heroin as a cough suppressant for many years, until the highly addictive effects became widely known and the drug became abused.
During World War I Bayer was a key manufacturer of munitions and explosives for the German government, responsible for much of that country''s trinitrotoluene (TNT), mustard gas, phosgene, and military grade chlorine. During the post-WWI era, and because of its war related activities, Bayer was stripped of its right to trademark “aspirin” in many countries including the US.
During WWII Bayer was a subsidiary of the German umbrella organization IG Farben, which made drugs and weapons used in experiments on concentration camp prisoners. Some 13 IG-Farben executives were convicted of crimes against humanity and war crimes during the 1947 Nuremberg trials.
After WWII Bayer became an independent company. In 2003 Bayer AG organized into one holding company with limited satellite branches, all controlled by the central Bayer AG. The smaller companies include:

- Bayer Chemicals AG
as well as three service companies:
- Bayer Technology Services GmbH
- Bayer Business Services GmbH

Bayer AG currently operates worldwide and employs over 120,000 people. The corporation is traded on the New York, German and London Stock Exchanges.
Bayer voluntarily withdrew its drug Baycol from the market in 2001 following reports of higher than expected deaths while taking it. Baycol was a high-powered statin, used in lowering cholesterol in patients with abnormal levels. Baycol is linked to the development of rhabdomyolysis, a potentially deadly muscle degeneration that can cause severe renal failure and other physical illnesses. The FDA supported Bayer''s decision to recall Baycol from the drug market.
