Astellas Pharma
Astellas Pharma Inc. is one of Japan''s largest Pharmaceutical companies. Astellas was formed in April of 2005 through a merger of Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. The two companies were Japan''s third and fifth largest individual companies and both have histories dating back to 1894.
Drugs manufactured by Astellas include:
Protopic (tacrolimus) – Protopic is a topical medication used for treating eczema, especially atopic eczema. In March 2005 the FDA issued a warning about Protopic and all other tacrolimus uses due to the apparent link between the drug and a rising cancer level. The FDA recommended patients to be aware of the risks when taking Protopic for their eczema. Tacrolimus was FDA-approved in 1994 for use in treating patients who had liver transplants and also other organ transplants.
Other side effects of the drug include:
- blurry vision
- liver and kidney problems
- tremors
- seizures
- diabetes
- insomnia
- confusion
- loss of appetite
- hyperglycemia
- depression
- increase in herpes and other skin related problems.
